It is true that SOME of the nurses will be missed and they did a good job and were dedicated - although they worked for a rotten company. It is sad to be losing good people, including Ines - and some of her backstabbing staff are staying. I don't trust them for a ninosecond!! 06/30/06 Miami-Dade JDC: ...i thought that garrido and hinson where ...partners. why is it she went around the corner and told mis-informed "Bart" that garrido was the one who had locked the mod down for hours, when it was actually her... i know this because i had to work a double that day on the mod and she told me...it was up to b-shift supervisors to let the youths out because she didnt really care because her shift was over and that if anything was going to happen it would be on b-shift. now what type of partner that is. She has asked me to see about rounding up all parents and teens about their experiences with DJJ and what has happened to them while in custody. 06/30/06 Boot Camps: Cathy your so happy that the Boot Camp program is gone, instead of telling ABC action news you should have came into the program and told the boys who were crying that you are happy it's closed. You also said on the news that you think that the Polk County Boot Camp had a better education component instead of Pinellas, but you are wrong as usual. Pinellas Boot Camp scored higher on the GED and the FCAT than any other DJJ ran program. They were also ranked number 1 out of 250 programs in the state for the no child left behind act. Efficient rehabililitaton requires decent, professional staff not marginal, poorly educated,low skilled ,high-turnover,sometime workers or dishonest,self-serving careerists. There are a few decent private providers and DJJ officials with effective management skills and a little integrity. DAMN FEW! The big three major player providers that get most of the contracts are all corrupt and most have blood on their hands. Throw these crooks out and then wash up. Tell these hustlers to stick their donations and consultant fees where the sun don't shine. Then let's root the rot out of DJJ. Cathy... again... while you were outside in the parking lot chasing around the news vans (you were in the process of leaving when another van pulled in and you put your car in reverse and came back for another fifteen minutes of fame), the former boot camp boys were inside crying and scared to death having to leave the program. Not one of the boys were happy they were leaving, if they were given a choice you would probably be surprised to hear they wanted to stay. I guess the Boot Camp was not as bad as you thought it was. 06/29/06 Other DJJ facility-Okeechobee: Mold ! You ain't seen nothing yet. Come check us out at Okeechobee. We got mold growing on mold! Probably got maggots too but I can't say for sure. Just when they get to know the facility and each kid and all their BS that goes along with each kid, you go and get a whole new staff that don't know sh**!! At least some of mental health is staying and Park Place coming in is used to dealing with DJJ facilities. I CANNOT say that about the new nurses coming in!!! Why did it take and outside investigation to expose the maggots and correct the problem. 06/26/06 Other DJJ facility-Polk JCF: Hey, Why did the DJJ/company big shots at the big crisis task-force meeting at PJCF last week not meet in Echo,Delta or Bravo buildings. I guess these stinky, moldy buildings are ok for the kids and staff ;but not ok for the DJJ/company brass. Did they eat in the dining area like the youth? You got to be jokin,they sent out for food. 06/23/06 Other DJJ facility-Polk JCF: Why don't DJJ reviewers do more surprise inspections and visits to the facilities. Before almost every review or visit at PJCF we clean and paint like crazy. We also staff up so we can look good. After the visitors leave things get back to normal. Surprise inspections are needed if anybody wants to know whats happening round here. 06/22/06 DJJ-Policy and Procedure/Polk JCF: Floor staff at our facility PJCF know that they better keep quiet about problems at work if they want to keep workin. Some of our best staff are already gone. Word round here is "if you talk you walk". Only the staff cares about the youth and we can't do much. Even Ramsy was better than what we got now. ~Anonymous
06/22/06 Other DJJ facility-Polk JCF: At Polk JCF the blood from the "non-riot" this week is still on the wall. This place is dangerous. We need more staff here. A few weeks ago a youth went over the razor wire and escaped with cuts from the wire on his body. His absence went unnoticed for hours until his family notified the sheriff. The kid could have bled to death on the wire or in the woods before he was even found to be missing. We need more help at PJCF now. ~anonymous-job scared

At Orange JDC, the complaints and the gossip will never stop. The animosity between staff and the unprofessionalism of supervisors and admin were there when I was hired and was still there when I resigned a few years ago. Now DJJ is hiring 19 yr olds to take care of 18 yr.old detainees. How are these type of staff able to keep these kids safe? In reality some staff working there cant even take care of themselves. Why is Michael Williams and Larry Eason still employed at DJJ. These two are the most corrupted uncle toms at Orange JDC. They both threaten staff with their jobs when something goes wrong. For example, when that boy who attempted to escape by kicking door #4 open and ran into Williams office, why wasnt it reported to I.G.? Williams had every staff hushed about the attempted escape. Larry, how about when you tell staff "lets pretend this never happened" when an incident arises to cover your own behind. How about when a former staff was sexually harrassed by Sgt.Howard? In order for you to truly improve your organization you need to do something that may be extremely difficult for you. First, you must get rid of the idea that your job is linked to an image that you project and that the secretary position is a largely public relations matter. Next, you must listen to the front line workers; this may be hard for you because you are used to utilizing your chief of staff to handle these tasks. I realize you have come from the New York Department of Corrections but the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice needs to be handled differently than from your other leadership positions held. Your organization is in a deep crisis and only gets worse...take my advice and start using hands on leadership by disregarding what you hear from the superintendents of these facilities...you need to go direct to the front-line staff -- this type of leadership is called Total Quality Leadership (TQL) and is what is needed to turn DJJ around. ~Anonymous

Okay--ERDC. (Sorry to harp on this, but it doesn't seem like much is getting done.) Some people are on "light duty" but not workman's comp so THEY don't have to work double shifts. I thought DJJ was a no light duty without being on workman's comp place? I guess it depends on how well you pucker up. Some intelligent human being decided to put all the "new" people (who by the way call in and get "sick" more than the old people without any repercussion) on the afternoon shift that has more contact with the kids...and these people haven't been properly trained! And NOBODY in administration or the DJJ hierarchy is asking why almost 40...yes I said 40! people have quit this year alone. Old schoolers are dropping like flies. There is no respect and no concern from administration whatsoever. Their first priority is NOT the kids NOR the staff, but organizing mandatory (well only for night shift) "painting parties" and "cleanups" when they know an admin from Tally is coming. Please, give me a break. The kids aren't safe because the staff aren't trained properly, the staff aren't safe because of lack of sleep...and quite frankly lack of concern for the kids anymore...but somehow the administrator's jobs at ERDC seem to be quite safe. To the last person at ORJDC that posted - check your sources. COnsult Care did not knmow they were going to be out of here last week, so, they DID bid. As far as nursing, you are correct, thed nurses did work hard, but niot all of them. There is one nuirse that hates her job and makes sure everyone knows it, and her attitude sucks. 06/13/06 Other DJJ facility-PJCF: How prevalent is the lack of security and staff coverage in other DJJ sites across the state. Here at PJCF we are almost always understaffed. Security and schedules suffer and nobody seems to care. Is this situation common or it just Securicor? ~Anonymous

CCI did not want to renew due to the inappropriate behavior and unprofessionalism that some of the employees within Orange JDC displayed. Consult care inc is a company and to lump all the nurses into the category of your hate towards consult care is very ignorant. Most of the nurses at ORJDC worked there butts off...They took good care of the youths that needed medical attention...as for Consult care...good riddins!! I am glad someone else has notice the conditions at Escambia DJJ.It is not a safe place to work much less to have youth housed there.Administration is so eager to get vacanies filled,they are just hiring anyone.They aren't concerned about quality because they aren't on the floor working with these people.And talk about promotions,how can you just graduate from the academy and get a promotion! What happend to the probation period? How can you be promoted to a SJDO and not know how to do a admission or a release? Escambia Regional Detention Center…. After reviewing comments I decided to make one myself. No one could be possible be jealous who a woman who used other means to get a position instead of her work experience and education background. Escambia Regional Detention is full of favoritism and staff members who have could have been replaced a long time ago. It seem if you with Jeanette crew your job is secure and if not you have to walk on egg shell to keep your job which is not fair to all the hard dedicated staff members who really deserves better. Ramsey was a good Supervisor but you pulled him from being a Supervisor, but you're using him for intake purposes. If G.L. had a lived none of this would have been going on, you know why because he would have told Laurie where to get off at, and leave the floor along where Jeff allows here to take over and do what she wants. I am proud of the way the teaching and correctional staff have come forward with their concerns about Polk. I hope that parents will become aware of the dangers of damp, moldy buildings and will also advocate for their children's current and future physical and mental health and well-being.

06/06/06 Polk JCF: The recent discovery of unhealthy conditions including dampness and mold at PJCF in Polk City provides another reminder of the existence of official neglect on the part of DJJ. Where are our state officials ? The problem of dirty facilities and poor management is not limited to this one troubled facility. DJJ needs new leadership at every level. I cant remember what the date was, or what time it was. but I was at Greenville Hills when this happened. I was in class, in English class, and before we had went to school, the staff did not allow us to go to the bathroom at all..so, when i got into class, bout 20 minutes after, I ahd to use the restroom,,I ahd to take a number 2 very badly..my stomach was feeling like it was gonna blow up.. So I raised my hand, and asked the teacher, if I could use the bathroom..then here comes Ms.Hopkins, a big mean staff member that liked to slap me all the time for no apparent reason that I could recall...she said, "what do you think you are doing Sholly?".I said to her, the teacher said I could go to the bathroom. Ms.hopkins looked at me, and asked me what number, I told her a number 2..she said then to me, "no, you go sit down, and hold it". I told her I couldnt hold it much longer, and she made me sit in a desk facing a corner..I was sitting in that desk, my stomach about to burts open, and I could feel it, almost coming, so I started begging her to let me go, but she wouldnt ease up, she wouldnt stop yelling at me, she wouldnt even be nice enough to let em go to the bathroom..I started to cry, in hope she would get simpathy for me. but it looked like she just got off on seeing me cry and begg..squirming in my chair.. After about another ten minutes, Ms.Hopkins finally got a call on her radio, the front office told her she had a urgent family phone call. so, when she left, I looked at the teacher with teras in my eyes, and then the other students in the class started telling her;"hey, why dont you let him run to the bathroom?". so the students also felt bad for me. The teacher looked at me and said , "Hurry up and go, and come right back." I got out of my seat,a nd hurried off to the bathroom, and did my businness.. when I got back to the classroom, to my dismay, Ms.hopkins was sitting in her chair. she looked at me and said, "you sneaky lil Cracker, waite till you get back to the cottage." After school, we wnet back to the cottage,a nd Ms.Hopkins took me into the back room, with no windows, and no cameras, and told me to face her, and put my hands behind my back, and then, all I felt was a big fist slam into my jaw, I couldnt fight back, because I would ahve gotten a charge. So I took it, she then started to slap me with the back of her hand, and then pushed me on the carpet, and kicked me a few times.. Then, her big over weight self lost her breath, and told me to get the fuck out of the room, while she got some water.she finally left me alone..
Why did this happen to me? because I ahd to use the bathroom very badly.Its not my fault that i ahd to use the bathroom. it is nromal..but she just loved watching me beg and cry.. that is just wrong, and I have seen this same exact thing happen to many other kids. and it has happened to me more then twice while at GHA............ ~Christopher Sholly

A little note for my co-worker's here at Miami-Dade Regional Juvenile Detention Canter. It would be greatily appreciated if you would take some time out to proof read the writings that you submit on this website. If you are unsure of how to spell a word, PLEASE pick up a dictionary. How can you write something in attempts to be-little someone when you can't even use correct grammer? Although I can't say either way whether there may be merit to the allegations posted I always believe where's there's smoke there's fire. Having worked for Mr. Williams I do have some first hand knowledge of his management practices. I can say that he needs to be checked up on because he's not squeaky clean. I hope that DOE will soon be able to provide a program by which we can begin appropriate educational services in a more timely manner by using our computers to determine a new client's BASI test scores at another facility. i am a staff at another facility and i know first hand how difficult this job is. i cant help but wonder why tallahasse has not removed the supt. of manatee. it is extremely obvious that these staff do not like or respect this administrator. as a result even if all these allegations are lies it is still a unhealthy enviroment for staff and youth. have we not learned yet that when people are unhappy it shows all the way around. multiple call-ins, staff seeking other jobs, gossip, im not saying he should be terminated(i dont like seeing people out of work) but he should be moved to another facility or section of djj and then a analysis can be made to compare the work enviroment before and after.and i believe a good administrator should attempt to build a bridge between themselves and employees to create a positive work enviroment. appearently there is not one in place at manatee and thats something that mr. gargett should be working on. there are alot of facilities in this region and believe me ALL know about this site and surf it.but yet the majority are about this center.that tells me his people are frustrated and are venting. as a administrator that is something he should be thinking about.there is alot of other centers who have staff that dont post, and its probably cause staff are not aggravated. keep that in mind. ~Anonymous

Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued.

And we said, everyone's entitled to free speech....

And the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence and illicit sex... And let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes...
And we said, it's just entertainment and it has no adverse effect and nobody

Superintendent Isbell prevented the Nurse from getting the boy to the ER. EMS and the police were notified. Isbell refused to let them see the youth... Isbell resigned and the Registered Nurse was sent by by. Consult Care INC. was the provider when this happened in 2004. No one backed up this nurse for fighting ...for this youth. Many people placing complaints about DJJ on this website are trying improve the working conditions in their facilities. I know that some of the comments are inappropriate and vulgar - my guess is because these people are so overstressed, frustrated and fearful. I have to seriously doubt your assertion that "Kids in MRJDC are well taken care of and frankly, most of them like the structure, staff and stability of the facility." Try telling that to the young man who died recently in the juvenile boot camp. After all of the publicity and information regarding the need for DJJ to change the abuse of the juveniles continues. Thankfully the national press has gotten wind of this and now finally more national attention is being placed on Florida's DJJ. The complete disassociation and lack of concern by Governor Bush bothers me. I understand that Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton who initially refused a meeting with Gov. Bush in Tallahassee but then at the last minute one of his staff minutes called them for a meeting. The three of them prayed a short prayer for justice in the recent death. But it is apparent that Gov. Bush does not have a handle on the situation and he is far too distant in this matter. As many complaints that have generated and as many deaths occurring he is just too cavalier in his responses. Gov. Bush is not providing any pressure on DJJ for reform. The pressure for reform is coming from many of the postings on this website. So my response to your posting is that you are giving the same party line that most of the administrators and politicians in Tallahassee are giving who are indifferent or removed from the actual situations occuring. People do GET TIRED of HEARING the complaints. Kids in MRJDC are well taken care of and frankly, most of them like the structure, staff and stability of the facility. You will never get rich doing this kind of work.We are here to make a difference in the lives of a child even it is for a short period of time. We have always competed with the employers you mentioned for entry level positions. This is a statewide systems issue and will never go away until enough taxpayers petition the government to acknowledge this. My guess is it will never happen. SO my recommendation is if you have a terrible supervisor, feel like you are underpaid, and are so concerned about retention, then go to Walmart, Jiffy lube or one of those other places. What do you consider extreme, strong supervision? No one deserves to be belittle! The comment was not taken out of context. I do not care if the Governor was in the room. If a staff member would have said it to him he would have been very upset and we all know when he does not like someone he goes after them in full force. Late, check the logs, what time does he check in? Better yet how many meetings is he really in? We at Manatee are a team a great team. We get the job done with very little staff. The retention rate of staff continue to be a problem. If Tallahasse was paying attention we have had staff quit with many years invested, veteran staff because of the ignorance of this man. I only have a few years in and do not intend to put in to many more. He is abusive and nasty and not a people person. He is uncaring, uncooperative and loves to hear his own voice. He is always correct never can be wrong at least admit it. His two left hand men can not wait until they see better days. 04/21/06 Other DJJ facility: Re: "Get Real" 4/20. It’s not the job of detention workers to teach teenagers respect, or to discipline them. You cannot do that in the short time that they are detained. Your job is to keep the youth safe and secure during their stay. Gargett and Raggett's claim to fame is that they ran the Manatee Boot Camp with a very heavy hand. Lets get real here. If you are that miserable in any facility then I would find another job. why spend your adult life working in misery. Detention facilities must operate with extreme supervision and strong, assertive leadership. We are responsible for the safety of ourself's and the youths. I was at the meeting you are referring to and you have taken this out of context just to once again frustrate your coworkers. Being an officer is a difficult job- we all know that. I wonder how you would do as the superintendent taking Mr gargett's or any superintents place ?Lets think for a moment. All of your complaints can be summarrized easily- a passive-laid back leader- take 2 or 3 weeks off, come in late whenever you want, only give about 50% of yourself.I have to tell you that you would not make it. The responsibility as an officer that you all show on this site demonstrates your inability to work as a team, communicate responsibly, and provide the leadership that is needed to manage any detention facility. If you want to make a change then work on yourself first. The kids that we work with have problems. They need discipline, they need boundaries and they need adults to act like adults. 04/17/06 DJJ - Policy and Procedures: ...now is the time to bring down the department... officers are overworked, underpaid, and placed in a big liability... they mandate single parents with no advance notice who have to run pick up their child... They speak so much how they are "Child Advocates" but yet they force parents to neglect theirs for the job...SHAME ON DJJ!... DJJ should return the kids to their parents because we are not doing any different from the parents... we are the abused and neglected employees and we don't have the courage to stand up to the devil... I believe that now is the time to bring down the department for the big scam they have held onto for so many years. I applaud the Palm Beach Judge for looking into why the youths that are supposed to be housed in detention for weeks, a max of 21 days are now housed for more than three months and some even go as far as six months. The worse thing about it is that this is dead time for the youths. The youths get aggravated and the officers have to pay for their frustrations by receiving verbal and physical abuse. Let's talk about all the youths that have Mental Health issues and the fact that detention is not equipped for these type of youths. What occurs is these youths begin to get out of control are then aggressive physically and receive additional charges even though we KNEW that they have special needs that we are NOT TRAINED TO UNDERSTAND and IDENTIFY. What about having so many youths out on the dayroom floors sleeping who are on precautionary observation mixed in with sexual offenders who cannot sleep with cellmates!? The facilities are soo understaffed that many facilities have gone to 12-hour shifts and that still isn't enough. The officers are overworked, underpaid, and placed in a big liability. Now let's talk about the facilities that are old, continously having problems; has anyone asked how many times a year the airducts are maintained? Do you people really know what you are breathing? Just like they found mold and other things wrong at West Palm Beach Detention Center, they should investigate every facility for that. IS it mandated for OSHA to come and conduct and inspection or do we have to contact them? I am so tired of management staff telling officers they can't have a two-week vacation when they have the time because of shortage of officers. The real good one is when they mandate single parents with no advance notice who have to run pick up their child and are to pay a certain amount of money when they are late to pick up their child. They speak so much how they are "Child Advocates" but yet they force parents to neglect theirs for the job...SHAME ON DJJ!!! WE cannot bring our children to work in case of a hurricane, we cannot bring our children to work on take your child to workday, we cannot be with our children even though we have annual leave!? What is that!!!
I will say this, DJJ should return the kids to their parents because we are not doing any different from the parents, we force our officers to leave their children whenever, however, whichever, regardless the repercussions. We must neglect our kids to be their for the state's kids and Tallahassee staff ALWAYS GOES HOME TO THEIR FAMILIES. Now if you said that we were paid enough, respected, appreciated for the work and dedication to the department and that they had respect for the well being of our children, than I would say, it's worth it. But lately I have been going home and saying to myself what is the purpose!? Not being able to do anything about it makes me feel weak and the fact that everyone is in fear for their jobs makes it worse. For those who have stood up and represented those in fear... 04/09/06 DJJ - Policy and Procedures: ...Why shouldn't the children...have books in their rooms?...In fact JEEP part of DJJ Quality Assurrances has Reading instruction as one of the main things they are looking for...Perhaps if you don't want the kids to have books in their cells then maybe you would be smart enough to start bringing in books they would be interested in and read out loud to them particularly in the evenings before they go to bed...You could be just the person to spark the interest in them. In fact JEEP part of DJJ Quality Assurrances has Reading instruction as one of the main things they are looking for. Perhaps if the children would learn how to read better, they would be able to read the newspapers and learn all the wonderful legal activities that are out there being offered to them. Perhaps instead of going out and committing a crime, at least one youth would stay home and read a book. Have you ever thought of that? Remember if the kids of today do not ever learn how to read they will never be able to fill out their own appeal papers when they become an adult prisoner, and society will have to pay for their time when they get LIFE in prison. Think again, or better yet start reading! Perhaps if you don't want the kids to have books in their cells then maybe you would be smart enough to start bringing in books they would be interested in and read out loud to them particularly in the evenings before they go to bed instead of the kids actting out, horse playing and screaming from one cell to the next keeping everybody awake. Think about it. Every child should be read to, from birth on.....perhaps these children have parents that never read to them, so they themselves have never really learned how to enjoy a book. God knows how you have a large percentage do it even if they were not to blame. At the same time let's discuss how you place officers in a great liability by have our facilities understaffed and working in poor conditions. The youths are also living in those bad coditions. You might as well give them back to their parents because you do not give us the tools to do any better.
So you gave us a 5% raise and now we are having our evaluations done but we will not receive our bonuses. What good is an evaluation then? You put a good show when the legislators come around and the reality is that you are self-centered, egotistic and only think about your deep pockets. I thought when this site was established, one of it's purposes was to be a tool for staff who are being subjected to inhumane working conditions, abusive management, and hostile work environments to have a outlet to attract assistance from those who have the resources to help address these matters. Despite the numerous messages which are really translated into officer's cry for help that have been posted on this board in reference to the working conditions at the Miami Dade Regional Juvenile Detention Center, no one seemingly have even cared enough to make an unannounce visit, speak with some of the staff who have been mentally, emotionally, and physically ranned down at the decisions of the insensitve dictatorship of an administration, but yet be expected to perform efficiently when it comes to rendering care for youth in our care. Dale Dobuler has his own agenda, which does not include the best interest of the many men of women in blue who are keeping this facility running,and he has surrounded himself with a team who are more concerned about keeping Master happy, more so than advocating for the real issues that officers are being confronted with daily.
