"Do children have the right to protect themselves from attacks? Daniel has been charged as an “adult” but as a child he has suffered post-traumatic stress from the incident and has spent the past 9 months in adult jail where his emotional and mental condition has deteriorated." ~ Save Daniel Carter

March 6, 2004 Teen acquitted in uncle`s death
Amber Bollman, Pensacola News Journal

An Escambia County jury on Friday acquitted 16-year-old Daniel Carter of first-degree murder in the July 2002 stabbing death of his uncle, Jack Carter. "Daniel believed all along that if a jury could be put in his bedroom that night, they would understand his actions," Cindy Carter said after her son's verdict was announced.

Daniel Carter, who did not testify, maintained that he acted in self-defense after his uncle stormed into his bedroom, beat him with a large steel flashlight and threatened to tie him up and castrate him.

Several children's-rights advocates rallied outside the courthouse after the verdict Friday. They were joyous over Daniel Carter's acquittal but critical of the fact that he was prosecuted as an adult for the killing.

Though acquitted of his uncle's murder, Daniel Carter still faces criminal charges for attempting to escape a juvenile detention facility two weeks after his arrest. His next court appearance for the attempted escape charge is scheduled for April 6. "Hopefully they will drop this charge since he was being held there for something that he never should have been," Gallegos said. "Hopefully they will let him get on with the rest of his life."

December 31, 2003 Soon the court date will be here for Daniel Carter, the kid is innocent and the system knows that.

The system will be watched by many people, so keep an eye opened, For what will happen. This time Justice must be done, the kid will go free and I hope he will take the system to court for its human and civil rights [outrages] against him.

The Torture the non Medical Care, the non trial date and the overall beatings he Suffered and "not only at the hands of other inmates", and one other thing ask were the ACLU AND THE HUMAN RIGHTS PEOPLE, HAVE BEEN? Or is that Only for others? Its time to start acting and asking why! This case is a national outrage, but sadly most can't get that fact, But Happily some do.

We Are still watching You Rimmer, and I see a real Rat.

June 5, 2003 Hi Cathy - I am the mother of 15 year old Daniel Carter, charged with 1st degree murder as an adult and held in the Escambia County jail for 11 months.  While incarcerated, he has been beaten by other inmates, watched on video as he attempted to escape by climbing into a ceiling tile space (fell out and broke his arm), has been set up by the "inside" for punishment in solitary confinement, and refused medical and dental care. He has received a poor excuse for psychiatric and psychologic care and made a guinea pig for an array of antidepressants and antipsychotic medications to treat his severe depression and post-traumatic stress.  He was wrongly indicted by the state prosecutor who withheld information from the grand jury and was charged as an adult.  Please read more about his case at www.kidsincourt.com, www.KidsInCrisis.org , www.danielcarter.us, and/or www.betrayedinccocence.org .  Any insights or assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & God bless,
Cindy Carter/Dan's mom
